If You’re Not Growing, You’re Dying. False. That was a trendy self-help, cultist saying that gained popularity after The Secret came out and everybody drank the kool-aid. In my opinion, this statement is kind of… dreadful.
It’s dreadful because this statement suggests that if you’re not working on yourself and making progress, then you suck as a human being. So to not suck, you must continuously self improve, be good enough, and strive to become somebody.
The truth is you don’t always need to grow; you don’t need to continuously improve yourself. You can take a break. You can be as you are. You can eat ice cream or drink a beer or do both at the same time. There’s nothing wrong with you, you’re not broken. Please, please put the NYT best selling self-help book down.
Imagine what it would be like if all you did was grow? It would be exhausting. Destructive. Impossible. You’re going to grow and you’re going to die no matter what you do. So just let it happen but without the pressure and bullshit of becoming the best version of yourself. (Hint: there’s no such thing.)
If you’re not growing, then I’d like to be your friend. Because you’re probably an intelligent, well-rounded, grounded, fun person to be around and not some egomaniac who wants to manifest a million bucks into their lap. Let me know if you want to be pals, and we will self-improve over a beer.
