How to Find Multiple Solutions to a Problem

A unique problem solving tool is to ask your past self, present self, and future self how they would solve the problem. Consult with each of them, one by one. This will help bring perspective to the situation and therefore have a clearer path to a healthy solution.

A fun part about this process is that you’re not limited to just the 3 versions of yourself. You can consult other “voices” or aspects of yourself, e.g., wise and appropriate action, the voice of fear, the CEO, the small self, the powerful self.

For example, let’s say you can’t decide if you should quit your job and go full time in your business. First, consult with your small self. Ask, “What would you do in this situation? What are your concerns or fears? What information or skills do I need more of, small self?

Next, bring in your powerful and unlimited self for consultation. Ask, “What would you do in this situation? Do you have any concerns or fears? What’s the best case scenario? What’s the worst case scenario? Do you have anything else to say?”

Finally, consult with the voice of Wise and Appropriate Action. Ask, “What are your thoughts about this decision? What would you do?”

Anytime I’m faced with a tough decision or lingering problem I will go through this process in my journal. The idea is to gain perspective and see what’s possible. I have noticed less circular thinking and clearer paths to direct solutions.
